Episode 0844 - The Retrieval, E20:
Beagle, Chap, Depot, Master, Vanna, ~ 05

``Beagle: We have come to pick up Eagle20. ``Chap: Zaa. ``Master: There will be another dust storm, as we leave! ``Chap: Zaa. ``Vanna: Are all the spares in inside? ``Chap: Zaa. It is all yours. ``Beagle: We will call you on the radio, when we are ready for lift off. ``Chap: Zaa.
[Training flight in Eagle20]
``Beagle: It is actually an 8 Seater, and two small seats for baby cots, but they call it a 10 Seater. There are 2 engines at the back, and both run together and have to be matched otherwise it does not like going into Hyperdrive. --- Starting Engine 1. They may appear to be slow as they will take at least one unit each. Once the first set of 3 greens are up, we can start Engine 2. This again will take just as long, and we wait for the second set of greens. Once both are running and are equal, you can touch the 'final button, which will power up everything else. Again it will take a couple of units. Do not try to do anything until you have the 3 orange lights on and the two sets of greens have diminished. This set is above the other two sets.

There is a large lever on our left which is for climbing or descending. Forward is for up and back for down. You return the lever to the middle for normal flight. We cannot go straight up or down, but we can climb or descend at a 45º angle. So we put the lever in the forward position. Beagles to Chap, ready to lift off over. ``Chap: Confirmed. ``Beagle: 40% power, on the throttle, and lever set to forward. Once we have gained 600m it will increase exponentially and we can increase to 50% power and we will climb at a rapid rate.

``Vanna: Your Nav screen is showing the echo of Cosmo. ``Beagle: That is a good sign. You should never have to go above 75% power, and you just let it settle down. We are now at 100Km and ascending. ``Vanna: heading 205º ``Beagle: Okay changing course. The Joystick acts in the usual way as with ailerons, rudder. The foot brakes are on the pedals. ``Vanna: We are at 240Km. ``Beagle: We will land on top. Matching speed and locking orbit. I must admit I have not done a docking of this nature for decades. ``Master: This is all new to us. ``Beagle: If it was another Eagle you can do an auto-docking, but this has to be on manual.

There is a separate control for Power to 'thrusters mode', This will allow propellers to take over. There are 8 propellers, 2 front and back and 2 each side, back and front. Just press the button in the middle of the joystick and you can manoeuvre Eagle and align her up.

It shows you on the display which is like an artificial horizon. However it is best to wait, and let her sink down and she has to adjust to orbiting velocity. [Clonk] Secure hatches. ``Master: Hatches secured. ``Beagle: Release latches. ``Master: Hatches opened. ``Beagle: We leave her in warming mode. Okay let us go and look at this giant of yours. --- Blimey, she is huge. ``Vanna: I need a drink after this lot. ``Master: I think we all do. --- ``Vanna: Here you are 3 hot dried beans. ``Beagle: That was quick. I now understand that we can stay up here for the night. ``Master: Oh! I know nothing. ``Vanna: Let me show you the store room. ``Beagle: Wow, very nice and cosy. ``Vanna: I have booked the Hotel for tonight. ``Beagle: Wonderful news. ``Vanna: Let us not ignore Master. ``Master: I am okay. What frequency is Depot on? ``Beagle: 29537, but I will do it as they know my voice. [Radio] Beagle to Depot over. ``Depot: Depot to Beagle, go ahead over. ``Beagle: Permission to land Eagle20 at Depot for test runs over. ``Depot: Standby. --- Depot we need half time. ``Beagle: Confirmed. ``Vanna: The problem is, what happens with we land back, as Ziggy is on the ground? ``Beagle: Okay, we can do a couple of test runs and then we can land Eagle back at Algol Dock. We will do things in reverse and you can all have a practice run. ``Master: She is quite easy to handle as long as you have the correct sequence of events. ``Vanna: She appears to be heavy and I think the back is going to turn me around. ``Master: That is what happens on the Hoppers, but not on Eagles.
